Project Overview

Mission Statement

omni-games-info was created to solve a long-standing problem in the gaming world: the fragmentation and corporatisation of game-related information. Many once-independent databases are now owned by major corporations—such as Fandom, Inc. (owner of GameFAQs and Giant Bomb) and Atari (owner of MobyGames). Our mission is to build a reliable, independent, and user-focused archive of core gaming information that prioritises accuracy, transparency, and long-term preservation.

Project Goals

  • Baseline Game Coverage: Document every officially released game with essential metadata including title, developer, publisher, initial release date, and detailed records of revisions, re-releases, special editions, and distribution format (physical, digital, or both).
  • Consolidated, Searchable Data: Unify scattered information—across platforms, regions, and versions—into a structured, intuitive, and easily searchable format.
  • Community-Driven Accuracy: Empower users to contribute corrections, additional details, and niche knowledge, ensuring a continually evolving and trustworthy resource.
  • Built for Utility: Design the database to support not only gamers and collectors, but also content creators, game researchers, and developers of AI models who need accurate, structured metadata for training, analysis, or storytelling.
  • Preservation Over Hype: Unlike news-oriented platforms, omni-games-info is a static reference built for depth, quality, and long-term reliability—not trends or ad clicks.

Target Audience

omni-games-info is for gamers, collectors, historians, content creators, academic researchers, and those building or training language models. Whether you're verifying obscure releases, studying industry history, generating insights from metadata, or creating video essays, omni-games-info offers a centralised, transparent, and enduring knowledge base—by gamers, for everyone who values accurate game data.

Project Scope

What Omni-Games Covers

Omni-Games focuses on providing accurate, clean, and well-documented data for every officially released video game. This includes:

  • Title information: Regional variations, alternate titles, and sort-friendly naming.
  • Developer and publisher data: With support for multiple roles and region-specific distinctions.
  • Release information: Including dates, regions (US, EU, JP), and version history (revisions, reprints, special editions).
  • Platform support: Every platform a game was released on, grouped by device type and generation.
  • Distribution format: Physical vs. digital, including limited releases and download-only titles.
  • Additional metadata: Genre, production state, first-release flags, and more.
  • Verified sources: Data is based on structured research, not scraped content or auto-generated guesses.

What Omni-Games Does Not Cover (for now)

  • Real-time news coverage: This is not a gaming news site; Omni-Games does not track daily announcements or industry gossip.
  • Modern games still in development: Focus is on released titles. Early access, pre-release speculation, or unreleased prototypes are outside current scope.
  • User-submitted walkthroughs, wikis, or forums: While community input is valued for data accuracy, the site isn’t structured as a social platform.
  • Game box art or media assets: Omni-Games does not host or catalog game cover images, screenshots, or videos.
  • Games released outside the U.S., Europe, or Japan, or in non-English/Japanese languages: The current focus is on titles officially released in North America, Europe, and Japan, primarily in English or Japanese. Other regional releases or language-exclusive titles will be considered in later phases.

Intended Uses

For gamers: A clean, fast way to search through curated retro game data without corporate clutter.

Features & Functionality

Comprehensive Game Metadata

Access detailed information for every released game, including canonical titles, regional title variations (including native scripts such as Kanji), developers, publishers, release dates, platform availability, and distribution formats (physical and digital).

Group related games together—such as different versions, special editions, and regional variants—and link them to their respective platforms, providing clear context and easy navigation.

Advanced Search and Filtering

Search and filter games by platform, region, developer, publisher, genre, and release year using a clean, intuitive interface optimised for desktop web browsers.

User Contributions (Coming Soon)

Plans to enable user-submitted corrections and additional data to enrich the database through community curation.

Desktop-Focused Interface with Future Mobile Plans

Currently designed for ease of use on desktop web browsers. Mobile and tablet apps are planned, which will utilize an API for seamless access on those devices.

Future Enhancements

Upcoming features include user contribution tools and API access for creators and researchers.

Roadmap / Future Plans

Data Enrichment with Comprehensive Tagging

Omni-Games will enhance metadata by applying detailed, multi-dimensional tags across various categories, offering richer, more nuanced game information. These categories include:

  • Tags: Covering core genres (Action, RPG), game structure (Linear, Open World), mechanics (Platforming, Shooting), perspective/view (First-Person, Side-Scroller), tone/mood (Dark, Whimsical), environment (Medieval, Cyberpunk), focus/subject (Cooking, Space Exploration), player style (Twitch Reflexes, Puzzle Solving), mode support (Single-Player, Co-op), platform origin (Arcade, PC-first), and legacy type (Cult Classic, Remastered).
  • Distribution Type: Identifying whether a game is physical-only, digital-only, both, unreleased/leaked, or homebrew.
  • Platform Exclusivity: Specifying if a game is exclusive (full, timed, console, generation, region) or multiplatform.
  • Content Modifications: Highlighting fan translations, ROM hacks, restoration patches, and other unofficial or enhanced versions.

This tagging framework will enable powerful filtering, searching, and grouping, giving users precise insights into each game's identity, availability, and history.

User Engagement & Contributions

  • Develop community tools to allow users to contribute corrections, ratings, and reviews, fostering a collaborative and accurate gaming database.
  • Implement moderation and verification systems to maintain data quality.

API & Integration

  • Build a public API to provide programmatic access to the database, enabling developers, content creators, and researchers to use Omni-Games data in their projects and tools.

Enhanced Search & Filtering

  • Improve search capabilities with advanced filters by platform, region, developer, publisher, genre, and more, making data discovery faster and more precise.

Platform & Device Support

  • Expand support for more platforms and devices, including modern and legacy systems, to cover a broader spectrum of gaming history.
  • Explore mobile-friendly designs and dedicated apps for easier access.

Performance & Security

  • Continuously optimise site performance.
