1080 Snowboarding

Nintendo's snowboarding series, created at Nintendo EAD by British programmers Giles Goddard and Colin Reed following their work on Wave Race 64, with Shigeru Miyamoto as producer. The original game was shown at Nintendo's SpaceWorld show in November 1997 under the working title Vertical Edge Snowboarding. It launched in Japan first, timed for the winter season, while the European release was held back until October 1998. The game sold over a million copies and won Console Sports Game of the Year at the 2nd Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.

A Nintendo 64 sequel was first assigned to Left Field Productions. When Left Field's exclusivity contract with Nintendo ended, the project returned to Nintendo and was reworked by Nintendo Software Technology (NST) into 1080° Avalanche for the GameCube in 2003. Avalanche shifted the focus from tricks towards racing, and received a weaker critical reception than the original.
